About MBA

Managers at all levels are facing an expanding list of challenges and problems. In both the private and public sector, management has become much more complex as resources diminish and competition increases. The successful manager who is able to function in this environment must possess a sound understanding of the entire organization and its interrelationships. The Master of Business Administration (MBA) at CMU provides the important ingredients to assist the manager in accomplishing this objective.

Accredited by AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the MBA program prepares individuals to be effective managers in a diverse and complex world. The program develops managers both as leaders and team players and fosters integrity, social responsibility, and a high degree of professionalism. Emphasis is placed on developing oral and written communication skills as well as the interpersonal, analytical and integrative abilities necessary to function in dynamic organizations.

The program is designed to meet the needs of these groups of people:

1. Individuals whose business careers have focused on specialized areas and who seek to develop a more general management perspective in anticipation of further advancement;
2. Individuals with previous education and work experience in areas other than business who seek a general business education that will allow them to move into management positions; and
3. Individuals with limited work experience who plan to use the MBA as a foundation from which to begin their careers.

In existence for more than 42 years, the University's MBA program has a strong tradition of excellence. The graduate business faculty are not only well educated but also have substantial business experience.

To meet the needs of future managers, the MBA curriculum also receives constant review in light of emerging business trends and issues.

Concentrations are available in different business areas. A culminating experience is required which emphasizes the application of concepts and knowledge from course work to actual business situations. Courses have emphasis on using active student learning principles. Students have the opportunity to discuss international topics in the MBA core courses.

Program Highlights

The program is designed to encourage better integration across traditional business functional areas in addressing many of today's complex business problems.
Courses have more emphasis on using active student learning principles, as opposed to strict lecture-based instruction. The two-credit hour core courses are scheduled in eight-week sessions. This class format will allow students to complete the degree in less time through unique scheduling arrangements. This is a high priority among working adults

1. Classes are available on weeknights and Saturdays.  
2. Classes are offered in both Mount Pleasant and Midland. 
3. Concentrations are available in a number of different business areas which allow more  specialization.
4. A culminating experience at the end of the program (The MBA Project) has been developed which will emphasize applying concepts and knowledge from MBA course work  to actual  business situations.     
5. Nine core courses (2 credit hours each) meet for 8 weeks. 
6. Concentrations are available as elective courses (minimum of 8 credit hours). 
7. A 4-credit hour integrative project completes the program.

Locations and Course Format

The MBA program is available both on the CMU campus and in Midland, Michigan, which is approximately 25 miles away. Both sites offer the complete program. All courses at both sites are scheduled in the evenings for the convenience of the part-time student and are taught by full-time professors.
